Funny title..."Confessions from the Couch, tales from an Urban Teacher on the front lines," blog was informative & inspiring. It first got my attention with the subtitle, meaningful bell work. For the first time in my career, I have struggled this year with students' focus for my warm ups. This blog gave me a good idea for students to create a rhyme to demonstrate their knowledge of a topic as a warm up. I added "Video Bonus" on Monday's...a historical question with a video for students to solve by the end of the week. It has helped some, but at times I still find my students to be unfocused during warm ups.

It sounds as though you're trying lots of ways to get the students engaged as soon as they come in the door. One idea I had read about was to dim the lights so they focus more on the warm up task. It would be interesting to see if it works.
